Self-Publishing for Beginners: My Ebook is Ready to Upload so Where Do I Upload It and What Should I Prepare Ahead of Time?

First of all, a big ol’ Happy Easter to those of you who celebrate it! And Happy Spring to everyone!!!

Now then…if you’re brand new to Self-Publishing, here are a few tips on Where to Upload Your Ebook and What to Prepare Ahead of Time.

1. Prepare your Upload Descriptions

***Note: I do this ahead of time, usually right after I finish writing the book so it’s fresh in my rather scattered mind. I simply create a Word Document (which I’ll later copy-and-paste into the description field on each etailer’s platform) and include several different lengths of descriptions I’ll use for the book on various platforms.

Here’s an example for my latest release – PRACTICAL MISCHIEF (Belle Bishop, Queen of Witches, Book 1):

Product Description:

Amazon Top 100 Bestselling Humor Author D. D. Scott is back…this time, with Book One in her brand new and wonderfully witchy series, featuring Belle Bishop, Queen of Witches.

***Note: You can’t use “Amazon Top 100″ on any platform except Amazon. So, I change that to “B&N Top 100″ for Pubit and just leave it at “Top 100″ for the other platforms. And until you hit any bestseller lists, it’s perfectly fine to just say “Debut (you could put your genre here) Author.” You gotta start somewhere, and readers respect that! :-)

For Practical Mischief…

Think The Good Witch meets The Three Stooges and Tinker Hell.

***Note: I try to use Bold print on all platforms that let you do that for my high concept pitch for each book. The high concept pitch is the same as your basic elevator pitch or movie/TV pitch.

Book Description:

Belle Bishop, Queen of Witches, is a good witch.

Her sister Angelica? Not so much.

Belle rules her witchery kingdom using the ancient Wiccan Rede – ‘An’ it harm none, do what thy will,’ while Angelica runs amuck, casting one mischievous spell after another.

But this time, Angelica has gone too far.

It’s up to Belle and her former best friend, Atlas, the greatest wizard the earth has ever known, to save Belle’s niece, Gia, from Angelica’s magical mischief. If they don’t, Gia will end up in The Summerland just like her mother did the last time one of Angelica’s spells went awry.

Luckily, or unluckily, depending on how you look at it, Belle and Atlas have a little help from Atlas’s sons, who are every bit The Three Stooges, as well as an ornery faery named Tinker Hell and a deck of Tarot Cards waiting for someone to deal their destiny.

***Note: This is the “long description” that all of the platforms allow (usually up to around 4000 characters).

Bonus Content Included:

D. D. also treats you to a Sneak Peek at her latest Christmas book – THE BILLIONAIRES’ CHRISTMAS CLUB (co-authored with Bestselling Amazon Author Theresa Ragan) – where you’ll first meet Belle’s niece Gia and her prince of a fiancé.

***Note: I include my Bonus Material blurb in the long description section and also the About the Author and Praise for D. D. Scott (except on B&N Pubit, which asks for the About the Author and Praise For/Reviews separately…in which case, you can just copy-and-paste in these sections individually).

Smashwords Short Description:

Top 100 Bestselling Humor Author D. D. Scott is back…this time, with Book One in her brand new and wonderfully witchy series, featuring Belle Bishop, Queen of Witches. For Practical Mischief…Think The Good Witch meets The Three Stooges and Tinker Hell.

***Note: Smashwords wants both a short and long description so I always go ahead and hammer that one out too in this Upload Document. That way, all I have to do is copy-and-paste and check to make sure the spacing transfers okay.

2. Where Do You Upload Your Ebook?

Currently, I upload to the following ebook etailers (always going directly with their own platform, if they have one):

Amazon KDP ( I do NOT use KDP Select, which means you have to be exclusive with Amazon for at least a three month period)

B&N Pubit

Kobo Writing Life

Draft2Digital (to get to Apple because I don’t have a Mac)

Smashwords (for the Smashwords store itself and to get to Sony, Diesel and libraries through Baker & Taylor)

***Note: You can open your accounts with each etailer long before your Ebook is ready to upload and get your payment info all ready to go. Then, all you have to do is upload your Ebook once it’s ready to go.

3. Have a rough idea which Categories you’d like to attach to your Ebooks during the Upload Process

***Note: You’ll have between 2 and 5 categories to assign for each platform. And here’s a fabulous series I did on how to do that (included is the scoop on choosing the tags/keywords for your book):

Okay…there you have it!

It’s Your Turn, WG2E-Land: What other tips can you give our self-publishing beginners? Also, feel free to ask any questions about the uploading process, and we’ll help you any way we can. :-)
